The National Bank of Poland has issued a collector banknote with the face value of PLN 20 to mark the 100th anniversary of Marie Skłodowska-Curie’s Nobel Prize for Chemistry. The banknote was put into circulation in 2011.
Maria Skłodowska-Curie – a Polish-French scientist, a two-time winner of the Nobel Prize, discovered the radioactive elements polonium and radium and introduced the concept of radioactivity. She was the first woman to be awarded the highest scientific prize and the only scientist to win two Nobel Prizes in different scientific disciplines.
The front of the banknote features the image of Marie Skłodowska-Curie and a view of the building of the Sorbonne in Paris.
The back of the banknote shows the image of the medal awarded to Nobel Prize winners, a quotation from Marie Skłodowska-Curie’s statement on radium, and a view of the Radium Institute in Warsaw.
